Everton 2-0 Blackpool – Official Highlights and Goals | FA Cup 5th Round 18-02-12
Two early goals helped Everton comfortably beat Blackpool to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals for the second time in nine years. Royston Drenthe scored after 49 seconds from Marouane Fellaini’s pass. Denis Stracqualursi then made it a dream start for the hosts on six minutes when he tapped in. Stracqualursi could have added to his total as Everton had chances to put the tie out of sight, while Kevin Phillips blazed over a penalty late on. The veteran striker hit the bar from a free-kick with Lomana LuaLua also hitting the post, but they were isolated efforts for the visitors, who also lost Gary Taylor-Fletcher as a result of a first-half collision with Everton keeper Tim Howard. Those events summed up a miserable afternoon for Ian Holloway’s team who were outclassed by their Premier League opponents and will now return to their battle for Championship promotion, starting with a key game at home to West Ham on Tuesday. For Everton, the victory extends their unbeaten run to seven games during what has been a profitable period which has included wins over Chelsea and Manchester City at Goodison. Blackpool’s poor start to the game was at odds with a run that has seen them go 10-games unbeaten since the turn of the year. Holloway’s men were up against top-flight opposition for the first time this season and they ran into an Everton side brimming with confidence. But the way in which they were two goals behind within six minutes quickly mapped out a game in which they failed to …
Norwich 1-2 Leicester – Official Highlights and Goals | FA Cup 5th Round 18-02-12
David Nugent fired Leicester City through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with a superbly-taken winner against Norwich City at Carrow Road. The visitors led through Sean St Ledger’s header, but Wes Hoolahan levelled, following up his own penalty after Kasper Schmeichel had saved. Both sides had efforts cleared off the line in pursuit of a winner. But Nugent won it, collecting Jermaine Beckford’s knockdown, before jinking through the Canaries defence to finish. Nigel Pearson had demanded a response from his Leicester side following their 3-2 midweek loss at Watford and got what he desired early on. The Foxes pelted the Norwich penalty box with a series of corners and their fourth in quick succession, from Ben Marshall, found St Ledger, who rose above Steve Morison at the near post to glance home. The early pace refused to ease and Leicester showed no signs of settling for a one-goal lead, pouring forward at every opportunity and looking like they had the Canaries rattled. But Norwich were handed a respite when Foxes keeper Schmeichel conceded a penalty. The Dane jumped over the top of Elliott Bennett and, although he got a fist to the ball, referee Mike Dean pointed to the spot. Use accessible player and disable flyout menus Schmeichel saved Hoolahan’s penalty kick superbly, diving to his left, but the ball spun back out to the Irishman who duly clattered it into an empty net. Leicester, who already felt they were hard done by with the penalty decision, were doubly …
Crawley 0-2 Stoke – Official Highlights and Goals | FA Cup 5th Round 19-02-12
Crawley Town’s FA Cup run came to an end against top-flight opposition for the second year running as 10-man Stoke advanced to the last eight. Last year’s finalists overcame Rory Delap’s controversial sending-off to go ahead through Jon Walters’s confident penalty for a foul on Ryan Shawcross. A Peter Crouch header shortly after half-time sealed the result. Stoke’s Danny Collins handballed Tyrone Barnett’s shot on the line in injury time but no penalty was given. Crawley went out of the competition to Manchester United last season at the fifth round stage. And they attempted to give Stoke a taste of their own set-piece medicine throughout the tie but the top-flight side’s extra quality in that department – both in defence and attack – proved critical. Despite losing Delap, the visitors displayed professionalism and efficiency to see off a side that were a genuine threat to their progress, having already beaten Championship sides Hull and Bristol City on their route to the fifth round. Tony Pulis was furious at the decision to dismiss Delap for a tackle on David Hunt, which his opposite number Steve Evans had ventured onto the pitch to protest against, although his team were in no way affected by the setback. Pulis had taken no chances with his team selection, fielding a powerful line-up that included England international Crouch in attack but it was Crawley who enjoyed the better of the early exchanges. Crouch almost gave the League Two underdogs the lead when Asmir …
Millwall 0-2 Bolton – Official Highlights and Goals | FA Cup 5th Round 18-02-12
Bolton put their relegation worries to one side as goals from Ryo Miyaichi and David Ngog secured an FA Cup quarter-final place at Millwall’s expense. Arsenal loanee Miyaichi showed why Gunners manager Arsene Wenger rates him so highly when he curled the ball into the corner in the fourth minute. Just before the hour, Ngog’s left-footed shot was too strong for Steve Mildenhall as Bolton went 2-0 up. Adam Bogdan then made a double save to thwart Harry Kane and Darius Henderson. Japanese forward Miyaichi, who only turned 19 in December, joined Bolton in the January transfer window and manager Owen Coyle will no doubt be hoping he will have the same galvanising effect that Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere had on the Trotters when he arrived on loan in 2010. The teenager latched on to Sam Ricketts’ quick free-kick and after holding off Alan Dunne’s challenge finished with superb composure. Fabrice Muamba and Ngog also had good first-half chances, while Millwall failed to test Bolton goalkeeper Bogdan despite the ample possession they enjoyed. The closest the Lions came to an equaliser before the break was when the Trotters’ Iceland international Gretar Steinsson sliced his attempted clearance from Liam Feeney’s cross over his own crossbar. Just after the interval Paul Robinson met Scott Barron’s 49th-minute corner with a header but did not make sufficient contact and the ball sailed wide. It was then Robinson’s poor clearance at the other end that led to Ngog’s goal, the …
