Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United – Official Highlights | FA Cup 3rd Round Proper 08-01-12

Man City v Man Utd FA Cup Manchester United survived a stirring fightback from Manchester City to win a thrilling FA Cup third-round derby at the Etihad Stadium. The drama started before kick-off when United announced Paul Scholes was coming out of retirement to play until the end of the season and was named on the bench. And it did not let up for a pulsating 90 minutes which threatened a United rout as they established a three-goal lead by half-time, but ended with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side hanging on as City tried to complete the most unlikely comeback. City were also fuelled by a burning sense of injustice after losing influential defender and captain Vincent Kompany to a contentious early red card from referee Chris Foy after a two-footed challenge on Nani. United were already ahead courtesy of Wayne Rooney’s header – and with City suffering a numerical disadvantage the visitors punished their neighbours in a style that, at one point, threatened complete revenge for their 6-1 thrashing at Old Trafford in October. Danny Welbeck added a second before Rooney was on target again from a rebound after his penalty was saved by City’s stand-in goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon, who was in for the rested Joe Hart. Roberto Mancini’s side refused to capitulate in adversity, mounting a response that ultimately failed to rescue the game but did great credit to their resilience and determination. Aleksandar Kolarov’s free-kick reduced the deficit and, when Sergio Aguero took advantage of …

HIGHLIGHTS City Academy take on Liverpool at Platt Lane

www.mcfc.co.uk http www.twitter.com A lacklustre performance from City’s Under 18s helped Liverpool to victory at Platt Lane in the Barclays Premier Academy League. Adam Sadler’s team were looking to keep up their position at the top of the League, while the visitors were keen to bounce back from a 2-1 defeat at Bolton Wanderers. It was a tentative start, with both teams determined to impose themselves. City kept possession and attacked with confidence, but struggled to create any clear-cut chances against a well-organised Liverpool side. Then with 29 minutes gone, the ball fell in the box for Matthew Regan, who blazed wide from five yards. It was a glaring miss for the visitors, but all was forgiven when Liverpool took the lead just minutes later. Midfielder Jack Dunn ran down the left and passed to David Moli, who fired home to punish City’s lapse in concentration after being caught on the break. The second half offered little solace for City as the visitors doubled their lead with a stunning strike from the edge of the box by Jordan Lussey. With 71 minutes gone the Blues were offered a lifeline from the spot after luckless defender Regan handled. Albert Rusnak stepped up but Tyrell Belford produced a solid save to deny City a route back. The Blues didn’t give up and continued to push for an opening, but Liverpool stood firm and scored a third, with Dunn confidently slotting the ball over home keeper Angus Gunn. Further blows were dealt to the home side with the loss of …

Manchester United U18s 1-3 Manchester City U18s: Official highlights from the Academy derby

Watch official highlights of Manchester City Academy’s 3-1 win against Manchester United in the Barclays Premier Academy League. Match report: City’s Under 18s enjoyed a scorching 3-1 away victory against rivals Manchester United to extend their lead at the top of the Barclays Premier Academy League. Coach Adam Sadler decided to include Elite Development Squad regulars Denis Suarez and Courtney Meppen-Walter in the Blues’ starting line-up and the decision proved inspired as the two players excelled throughout the 90 minutes. The unseasonal sizzling temperatures provided perfect conditions and City started the brightest, with Adam Drury and Suarez teaming up in midfield to menace and create chances early on. The Spaniard came close to breaking the deadlock on a couple of occasions, with a shot deflecting just wide of the post and one whizzing over the bar. The Blues’ persistence paid off and with 27 minutes gone Suarez turned provider when his sublime pass found the in-form Hiwula. He confidently finished past United’s goalkeeper Liam Jacob to give City the lead and chalk up his seventh goal of the season. It took just three minutes for City to double their lead with a superb solo goal from Albert Rusnak. The Slovakian tore open the Reds’ defence with his powerful run and finished off with a cool strike into the net. The home side managed to grab a goal back just before half time through striker Gyliano van Velzen and continued to push for an equaliser after the break …
